Meh. Seems to me that most houses that really go up in flames aren't salvageable anyway. And most times if an intruder is in your home whatever happens will be over before a policeman arrives. They're there to pick up the pieces.

The fire department is there to rescue and stop the spread. And the volunteer companies do that very well here. Not only every town, but nearly every small village here has it's own FD. My FD is less than 1000 feet from my house, and the two neighboring departments are within 5 miles in each direction.

All of our Fire Police are volunteer, as well. They get up in the middle of the night or leave work in the middle of the day to go help out, direct traffic, etc.

We also have volunteer EMT's that ride along in the ambulances...

Do not mistake me. I'm not insulting those fine fellows. Not a bit. Firemen are heroes, and have my utter respect.

I do have reservations about volunteer services, but they're based on the assumption that someone who isn't getting paid, may not feel the need to go that extra mile. Which, in the context of the emergency services, could mean the difference between life and death. I know I'd think twice about leaving my warm bed, and venturing out into a freezing wintery morning, were there not the inducement of pecuniary reward. Of course, that's supposing I hadn't made such a weighty commitment to begin with.
