I think it's just incredibly silly to think that people don't maintain contact with their friends and former colleagues, and help them out when they can. This is why character is so important when electing someone to office.
Who said he didn't maintain contact with his former colleagues, and what does that prove? I still talk to friends I worked with in 1985 at my first job. Do I get to influence how those employers do business?

Yes, character is important. who declined to take a salary for 3 years for the Olympics (which he saved and made a success) and his term as Governor. Now that's character.
