My son was in South Africa last summer, for a project for grad school, he didn't mention this. I guess the students were insulated?

SA is rather large. These are farmers being murdered in their beds and fields. Did your son venture out into the countryside?

Also..the media is tightly controlled over there, so there would hardly be a mention of it.

They have been trying to pass this violence off as "robberies gone bad".
