A paragraph that sums it up......

Wal-Mart contributes to a low-wage economy in other ways too. Its business practices force suppliers to cut costs, so in turn these firms cut wages.
They don't "force" anyone to do anything.. If you want to be on their shelves, then you have to leave them room to make margin.

Your choice.

Other retailers (who may not have such influence over their suppliers) are forced to cut the wages they pay to compete with Wal-Mart. Another Berkeley study estimates that in 2000, the total earnings of retail workers in the United States dropped by $4.7 billion due to Wal-Mart’s presence. It's all evil Walmart.. Let me ask you a question.. If there weren't a gross, over supply of low skill labor, wouldn't WalMart have to raise their opening wage to attract workers?

Why is WalMart suddenly exempt from the law of supply and demand? Why can they just command a wage, and workers comply?

I'll tell you: Because it's a statement about the labor market in general.. Not walmart in particular.

And fuck Berkley.. Who in the hell listens to anything that comes out of Berkley these days?
