It should be obvious to all that we need very little. Of course, ask that question of many people and they'll start rationalizing all over the place.

"Well, you've got to take care of the poor... Those single mothers need help... We can't just leave people out in the cold... The kids need school lunches... We should subsidize electric bills for the poor... People really should have top-notch medical insurance even if they can't pay for it..."

This is the shit you have to pound out of people. Don't ever let stupid emotional statements like this go unchallenged. They build on themselves.
