Let's hold Public officials to a higher standard
I had an interesting talk with my wife last night, on our short trip to visit some of her family.
She's seldom concerned about politics really. But on the drive, she was lit up about the 'current state' of things.
Our talk (we seldom talk about politics because she's normally just not interested in it and it ends up pissing me off when she gives me that blank look), turned to crime and corruption. Then to courts. The ATF. The FBI. Local police. Judges. Senators.......Laws. Crime. Punishment. etc etc......
I stay fairly up to date on current issues and such...but after talking about some of it, and then MORE and MORE of it.....even I was shocked at just how far we've sank.
It's a mess. Our laws are become fat and retarded. The enforcement of our laws are becoming fat and retarded. The interpretation of our laws are becoming fat and retarded. The punishments of those breaking our fat and retarded laws, are now also, fat and retarded.
The Colorado article about the cops getting sued for 15k is a perfect example. The cops Either didn't KNOW the law...or didn't CARE about the law. Yet no one is screaming for these cops heads. The city will end up paying the 15k. IE (taxpayers).
The entire nation, our entire system is
broken
. It's fucked up by greed and power tripping douchebags.
My solution is simple. Since we've already set up a two-tiered system of justice (penalties are worse for shooting a cop, threatening a judge or lawmaker, etc), it's time to use that system to fix the problems.
If you are a cop, and you're caught breaking the law, or failing to enforce the law, you go to prison for a much longer time than the average citizen.
If you're a judge, and you're caught breaking the law, or not enforcing the proper rules of law, then you go to prison for a much longer time than the average citizen.
If you're a law maker, and you're caught breaking the law, or taking money or other benefits to steer you in a certain direction, you go to prison for a much longer time than the average citizen.
If we're going to give these people, such
huge
amounts of authority and prestige and power.....then why don't we hold them to a higher standard?
How many people would want to be judges, cops, or elected officials, if they KNEW, that for any transgression they were caught doing, they'd spend 50 years in prison?
One offense, and you're gone for life. One DUI as a cop or judge, you get 50 years.
Would they STILL want to serve the nation or it's people then?
