Even if we could have, to what purpose?

The reason why I think conquering the world would be a good thing is because it serves a united world. No worrying about budgets when you have conquered the whole world. Peace lives forever (unless they're protestors). Democracy would make more sense, because leaders wouldn't be as much of a threat to security as they are now.
