Pedophiles and repeat rapists may be forced to accept chemical castration under tough new sex abuse laws being backed by the Turkish government.

The controversial proposals from the country’s ruling party would also see radically extended prison terms for sex offenders. The longest would be reserved for those who abuse a child in their own family.

If passed, the new law would require testosterone-suppressing drugs for “habitual and persistent” offenders and make the procedure a condition of probation for others. They would also have to submit to behavioral therapy.

Maximum prison terms for most sex offenses would almost double to 10 years, while convicted pedophiles would serve up to 18 years. But parents, step-parents, siblings or guardians of a child would face 27 years behind bars if found guilty of sexually abusing them.
