Feds tracking credit cards, store purchases without warrant: report

Federal law enforcement routinely tracks individuals through their credit cards, cell phones, car rentals and even store customer loyalty programs without obtaining a warrant, an online privacy activist has discovered.

...

No court reviews these orders, and the only role courts play in the process is to issue a non-disclosure order to the retailer or credit card company involved, meaning the person being tracked will never be notified of the surveillance.

What's the problem with getting a Warrant?

This is like the FISA case. Even a totally compliant, rubber stamp wasn't isn't good enough for the Bush administration. They had to have that Gestapo power... Just walk in and DEMAND the info. Anyone who complained was called a traitor and an enemy of America. The FISA court even allowed them to SPY FIRST, and come for a Warrant LATER. And that STILL wasn't enough power.

We warned at the time that this power wouldn't die with the Bush Administration.. Or even the GWOT itself.. That it would remain forever. Always ripe for abuse.

Now Obama has it.. President Hillary may get it too in 2012.

In spite of having this authority, we've seen more acts of terror.. It hasn't helped in any noticeable way. It's just another small lurch towards authoritarianism.
