In California it is much the opposite. Everyone thinks everyone else is well off unless there is some evidence to the contrary and in normal settings the laid back atmosphere tends to conspire against people dressed in suits. They're seen as uptight or pretentious. Of course, this is largely because people who can't afford the high land values, even after the real estate crash, have been driven out of the state so if you look middle class or upper class most people will treat you that way even if you're in swim trunks and flip flops (which everyone wears even in winter).

It's hard to argue with that assumption too when he goes home to a $1 million house and is driving a BMW.
