The following exchange between my mom and I wins the award for "Facepalm Moment of the Day", regarding my aunt running for a county judge position

This always fascinated me about USA. There are some sort of elections for
judges and sheriffs, right?

Here the judges are appointed by the state and have a lifetime (I think) term.

Our system sucks, but I don't see how letting them be elected by popular
vote would be any better. Gregarious and superficial fellows win elections.
I want judges to be silent, smart, nerdy types who know the law.
