It was Paul -- who never met Jesus -- who preached to the gentile world and created Christianity.

I am convinced that without Paul, the Jesus movement would have been absorbed into the mainstream Judaism of the time.

The is exactly Nietzsche's arguement when he stated "God is dead."

He suggested that it was Paul who killed the Jewish concept of God. He actually had a lot of respect for the historical Jesus.
