Whatever Paul did, or did not, there would be no Christianity without Jesus. (Unless some guy named "Bob" had replaced the key figure in all of the stories.) Attacking any central figure of a religion through ridicule is only going to win one friends in certain circles. (Said circle not residing here.) Otherwise, in mixed company it's just plain rude.

Many Jews would be surprised to learn that their god is dead.

An interesting point. I would say that it is belief that gives any god life. While there are believing Jews, the Jewish God lives.
