I think it would be a good idea for you to read the short transcript we have in the Beginners forum: 'What is Buddhism' and click on the MP3 at the top of the page so that you can listen as well.

There isn't a 'holy book' in Buddhism but most Buddhists accept that the Pali Canon is the earliest text which contains the authentic teachings of the historical Buddha.
