hi Jacaranda,
traditionally, Buddhists in south Asia conduct cremation. i have attended some myself, where the corpse is placed on a pile of wood
however, i would speculate this is related to climatic conditions rather than to any spiritual significance
a corpse must be disposed of. in south Asia, there are many trees for fire wood. where as, in the Middle East, there is little wood, so corpses are buried
however, in Christianity, there is often the view both the body & soul will be ressurrected, thus they bury the body, as an expression of love for the "whole person"
