I've been doing this Wolfhazel, it really teahces you catch physical and sensory impressions, but that then enables you to catch mental and emotional impressions, personally, I did it for a few hours and it enabled to catch mental impressions, I e-mailed Bihikkhu Yuttadhammo (an advocate of this technique) on Elements advice and he just told me to focus on whichever sensory impression came in the strongest, then fall back to the rising and falling of the stomach when nothing else was going on.
I don't do it all the time though. It was an interesting using the practice while my GF was watching TV to notice how TV shows cycle you through desire and aversion.
