My mother spent her life teaching surgical nursing. It was her wish to continue this after she died. So she donated her body to the medical university. She had been around dead bodies a lot in her day, and this is reflected in a funny story: many years earlier, when my father, a tall man, passed away, the funeral director told my mother that there were no coffins in stock that were long enough, that one would have to be specially ordered and that unfortunately this would cost a few hundred more dollars. She looked him right in the eyes and said, "Why don't you just shorten his legs?". The funeral director was somewhat taken aback and asked her, "oh, how can you think of such a thing?" to which she replied, "well, you don't think he's planning to get up and walk away, do you?" (end of story: he was buried a little shorter than he was when he was alive)
