I know, I was responding to mosov when he said that America needs to improve its education system to compete with the Asian countries.

The Asians and Indians who were born here do tend to outperform whites in school, I'd say that's probably because of the fact that their parents are usually very strict and pressure them to work hard whereas whites are often spoiled and allowed to be more lazy/laid-back.
He's right to an extent though. We need to spend more money on programs like education and healthcare and less on the military.

From what I've read, especially in fields like mathematics and science, American students seem to be falling behind their international counterparts.

I'm not saying drastic measures need to be taken but there is room for improvement.

Anyways, I think it's mostly a cultural reason like you alluded to for why East Asian/South Asian American students out perform white American students in many cases. Pressure from their parents and family to do well in school, attend a good university, get a good job, etc. However, things might change in the future for fourth and fifth generation students and so on.
