Not climatic conditions but where it is situated on the globe. Its proximity to other regions and its coastline have accommodated the most interaction with other cultures and civilizations.
Most of these European regions were very much on the peripheral of the known civilised world and isolated from the early great trade routes. There's are reason why the Levant, Middle East, Indus Valley, Turkey, Greece and Egypt were early hot beds of civilisation while Britain, Scandinavia and Germany were considered to be beyond the pale and regarded with mythical trepidation.
