To renounce all ties especially for a first generation American is pretty much impossible. It would be like trying to be something I'm not. But nonetheless I am all for the gradual integration/assimilation into Mainstream American Culture (over the course 1 or two generations or so). Multiculturalism often time only leads to divisions. I am culturally far more American than my parents, and a bit more "Americanized" than the average first generation Mexican American, and chances are my progeny will continue this trend towards complete Americanization. But nonetheless, I still feel strong ties to my ethnic background and traditions being that it is very much recent and fresh.
