You sure? Look at turks and armenians, they look very alike on average, I would say for most it is cultural and religious. Most marry and have children within their (very) small world.
Turks and Armenians probably would marry each other rather than an ethnic & racial outsider who vastly differs from both of them, based on appearances.

Xenophobia and familiarity applies to behaviors (ie. Religion) too.

People are first attracted to similar appearance (like an identical twin, or your own reflection in the mirror), and then second to similar behavior.

The analogy of your reflection in the mirror is the best example of Familiarity. You look like yourself. You act like yourself. But sexuality requires a male and female. So men & women (most often) marry each-other according to this standard of familiarity. There are sociological & biological reasons for this.

Ethnicities/Races tend to form breeding rites & requirements.

There exist biological taboos reinforced by sociological standards.

However individuals sometimes defy these sociological, cultural, and religious norms, at great personal risk. It generally is abnormal for different tribes to mix, or different religions (behaviors) to mix.

To reiterate the point, religion & culture is about behavior.

Familiarity applies to –both– appearance and behavior.
