Latvia has really high abortion rates. I actually read an article about that and I was completely shocked. On every 1000 newborns we have 200 abortions. Those who are in the age group from 25 - 30 are the ones who decide to have abortion most often. But in comparison with previous years, the number of abortions has decreased 2x! For 1/10 of those who decide to have an abortion it is the first pregnancy. No wonder why Latvians are dying out.

I think the Soviet Union already had an extremely high abortion rate. Communist and former communist countries obviously have higher rates in general.

An abortion was and still is seen as the most effective way how to not have a kid. that's extremely sad. What I also read about the situation in LV is that people are aware of other contraception methods, but they are simply too lazy to use them.
