I think up to the defeat of Third Reich in 1945 most of the Austrian proudly considered themselves German and had a strong desire to join their brothers in the north. However, things changed after 1945 with the emergence of Austrian Nationalism. Many Austrian try to distance themselves from German as much as possible to avoid any association with the Nazi past and some even go to great length to claim they were victim of Nazi Germany at that time.

I read that in these days only a faction of Austrian (most of the members of Freedom Party) still want to cling with the idea of Greater Germany..
