Not everyone knows the sunnah and people follow their culture. And not everyone who knows follow the sunnah. The Muslim beard has been negatively portrayed by secularists and others...it is associated with religiousness and therefore thought of as backward, and like the hijab for women people may feel intimidated to grow it. However if grown Allah is sure to confer honor to the person.
