The only reason the Sahara desert and Arabia are not lands of river and pasture (through human intervention) - is due to a lack of cheap available energy. If we are talking of the future, one can imagine a situation where for example massive water purification plants exist by the sea, powered through an exotic energy source which we do not have access to which turn Arabia into a land of rivers and pasture.
Of course this is in the future, and one can only speculate (if they wish). I don't buy into the theory of magnetic pole shifts having an effect on us. They are a common enough phenomenon. : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal

What we do know is the end of times will be a catastrophic phenomenon, how they do occur - we do not know - and will probably defy any scientific explanation we have access to today, or will do in the future.
