A more metaphorical meaning that I have come across is that it is not refering to a physical blindness, rather it is refering to a spiritual blindness though he may also be physically blind in one of his eyes (which one is not importanat). The spiritual blindness is the crux of the matter... it means he will be extremely materialistic even his supposed spirituality will be based on manipulation of matter.

Yup thats what I agree with. This is why dajjaal's forerunners who run this world order have placed so much emphasis on the materialistic fulfillment.
