I always thought this referred to doing so outside of salah. Does the hadeeth itself mention doing this during salah? If it doesn't, then would it not then follow that doing so during salah would invalidate salah?

Well, that's what I have always though as well. But a brother has heard the opposite, hence my question..

The hadith - as far as I remember - mentions this as a reply to someone who complained to the Prophet

of having wasawis during his Salah, but the reply doesn't clearly mention Salah, again, according to what I remember..
