There's something about the wording of that hadith... being dragged on their faced toward hell. That paints a very vivid picture in my mind (as I am sure it is intended to do). Just think about that a moment.

Some years ago, as a new convert, I wanted to become a student of knowledge. My new dream was to be a scholar. I failed in that, but in a way I am glad. Because when I look back I realize that my intentions then weren't to learn knowledge for the sake of Allah, it was I wanted to be smart like the scholars I watched and listened to. I wanted to be able to swoop into a conversation as the one who had all the answers and amaze people.

Had that happened, you can be all but sure it would've been me being dragged on my face toward the hellfire.
