Asalamu Alaikum,

i am interested in why people are following the Madhhab they follow?

so why are you Hanafi or Maliki or Shafi'i or Hanbali?

(this is not a thread about the legality of following a Madhhab since i personally believe layman must follow one of the Four Madhhahib) i am simply interested in why ''Yo''u are following the Madhhab you follow? what are the characteristics/principles you specifically prefer?, why did you chose the specific Madhhab etc.)

Same verse answers both questions.

وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالاً۬ نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيۡہِمۡ*ۚ فَسۡـَٔلُوٓاْ أَهۡلَ ٱلذِّكۡرِ إِن كُنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

[16:43] We did not send (messengers) before you other than men whom We inspired with revelation. So, ask the people (having the knowledge) of the Reminder, if you do not know.

Allah (SWT) has commanded me to ask the Scholars about what I don't know.

All Scholars around me are Hanafi therefore I follow the Hanafi Madhab.

Otherwise my choices are to either rely on "Shaykh google" or go out of my way and seek Scholars who are not Hanafi. Both choices are not substantiated from the Qur'aan & Sunnah i.e. :

a) I am supposed to seek trustworthy sources of knowledge and I don't know who runs what on the Internet

b) Islamic Shariah does not oblige me to ignore many Scholars around me (for no reason) and seek other ones i.e. that sort of hardship has not been stipulated in the Shariah.
