elders are human just like all of us and are open to corruption and the whisperings of satan just like all of us. they are not perfect and they are not masoom (innocents). follow them as long as they are on the quran and sunnah, and reject them if they if they go against the quran and sunnah. not everything they do has to necessarily be from the quran and sunnah as they are humans and not prophets (as), who are guided by Allah even in their apparent 'mistakes'.

rather than following the elders, follow the established usools laid down in the effort of tabligh jamaat and strive to practice the 6 qualities and make them an integral part of your life.

Assalamu alaykum

The message is that a person seized to be our elder (no more worth following) if his practices are against Quran and Sunnah. There can be ijtehadi difference, or a person with less knowledge and experience may not understand other person's actions.

Alhamdulillah Allah SWT has blessed this work with a mechanism "a dead fish is thrown out of sea"
