Community is determined to show its care for neighbourhood
The Al-Noor Foundation has joined together with three local mosques to carry out a regular clean up of their local areas in a bid to encourage others to do the same throughout Redbridge.
The four Muslim community organisations, Al-Noor Foundation; Al-Ansar Islamic Education Centre; Eman Foundation and Seven Kings Muslim Educational Centre have committed to clean up in their local area once a month. This will mean that every weekend of the year one of these organisations along with residents and volunteers will be keeping their area clean and tidy.
Pupils from Al-Noor Primary school which forms part of the Al-Noor Foundation have also taken part in the clean up along with their parents and teachers.
Over the past couple of months the organisations brought together over 250 volunteers and collected:
* 119 bags of rubbish totalling over 602kgs
* 23 bags of recycling totalling over 78kgs
Words from the lead of "For a Positive Change" project
Sadiq Kothia, Trustee of Al Noor Foundation which leads the 'For a Positive Change' project said, "We are astonished to see what can be achieved when a community is determined to show pride in their local environment. It is our real hope that with the support of others everyone will feel they can take this idea back to their communities and they in turn can start a similar initiative in their own areas. Wouldn’t it be amazing if this initiative was to spread throughout Redbridge and further afield?"
The Mayor, Councillor Muhammed Javed, was joined by Ward Members from Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell, The Leader of the Council, Councillor Keith Prince, the Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Councillor Alan Weinberg and Cabinet Member for Community and Safety, Councillor Shoaib Patel at the “For a Positive Change” event on 16 May at Al-Noor Primary school, Green Lane, Ilford.
The children from the Al-Noor primary school
During the event presentations took place showing what could be achieved when a community is determined to show its care for their neighbourhood. The children from the Al-Noor Primary school performed recitations and sang songs about things everyone could do to help the environment and then continued their good work by doing their regular litter pick in Goodmayes Park.
You too can make a change
This initiative encourages a real sense of civic pride among volunteers in their own neighbourhoods. You too can make a difference to your local area. The cleansing team at Redbridge Council can provide the appropriate equipment to help communities with their litter pick if required.
