I think they just killed Maude for the hell of it. They needed ratings. There's only like 5 or 6 people who voice pretty much the entire cast of the Simpsons so I doubt it was because someone quit. Can't see them casting someone for JUST Maude Flanders since she wasn't really a big character anyway.
Nope, Maude was played by
Maggie Roswell
, who also voiced Helen Lovejoy from 1990-1999 and 2002 onwards, and by
Marcia Mitzman Gaven
from 1999-2002. There's only really Harry Shearer, Dan Castanaletta, Hank Azaria and to a lesser extent Nancy Cartwright who play lots of big roles. Of the other regulars Yeardley Smith plays just Lisa, Julie Kavner voices virtually no-one outside the Bouvier family, Pamela Hayden plays several of the kids (such as Milhouse and the Flanders boys) and Tress MacNeille (who is in every cartoon show with female characters ever) plays Agnes Skinner and a whole lot of bit parts on top of that. Non-regulars who have played many characters include Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman (now sadly deceased) and Albert Brooks. Interestingly, they have indeed previously cast someone on a regular basis to play just one minor character: Doris Grau, who played Lunchlady Doris until her death in 1995.
So ha! I win this round, despite also exposing myself as a loser in so, so many ways in the process
