A laser beam was sent from Earth to the moon and the width of the beam was measured. The beam had spread out considerably, I've forgotten by how much. If the beam spreads out the energy of the beam will also be spread out and its ability to melt through the hull of the enemy craft will be reduced. too bad they didn't do it from orbit to the moon.
