Don't know about you all (looking at you Sloww), but this looks straight forward to me. Mandela is dead and Saddam killed him.

Or maybe my English teacher from way back then was worse than I thought him to be? The clue that it's figurative (apart from the fact that he's bringing up Mandela re: Iraq) is the plural - there isn't some clone army of Nelson Mandelas.
