Just a suggestion, but could it be the energy associated with the pendulum itself? The person who made it or if they had charged it with some intentions before your friend bought it? Does your friend know how to cleanse and absolutely clear a crystal? That is what first popped into my head, that this is possibly something that has been around for awhile, may have been handled by folks with intentions that are not coinciding with who you are.

Also, in a store such as that, I sometimes get feelings of interference. Both people of good energy and good intent come in, but people whose intentions are not always pure.
