Glad to hear you are OK, milehi! Sounds scary.

When my dad totaled my car, I thought I would like to keep the car and sell it for parts. The insurance company said I would need to have a salvage license in order to do that. (I get the feeling that the rules are state-specific. Not sure, though.) I was on the road at the time and could not/would not get the salvage license in FL. I think it was about $1000 difference if I were to keep the car, though. That car was probably worth $6-7K
