I watch movies of all genres. Some of the genres include violence, sexuality, perversion and such, and more than often, it works out all right. Salo is claimed by some to be a smart film, but the truth is it's an exploitation flick, and it's not much better than ISOYCIPOYG. Good exploitation films include Cannibal Holocaust, Ilsa: She Wolf Of The SS and, to some degree, Shramm, although the latter is more of an arty film with some exploitation themes (graphic violence and sex mostly).

Why, you may ask? Well, it's nice to see something else than nice and polished Hollywood films. I watched Schramm yesterday, and believe me when I say that Hollywood has never produced any serial killer film like this one. It's intense, it's disturbing and it's all so very well done.

Asian extreme cinema is also something one should give a shot. I recently saw a Japanese splatter from 1989 named Biotherapy. A short little film (about 35 minutes) with, as far as I could tell, a cheesy plot and bad acting, but you know, it was great. It's a splatter, and it delivers the goods. There was no subtitles, so if the action hadn't been good, I would have been bored. Now, it's highly unlikely you'll find Biotherapy, as it's kinda rare, but you should check out Takashi Miike's movies. They're more friendly to the mainstream viewer, although they do feature extreme violence and some sex/rape. Audition is a slow paced chiller, whilst Ichi: The Killer is more of fast paced action flick, and it features one of the best characters ever; Kakihara.

You see, there's so much good stuff out there that most miss out on, because they don't care to explore the independent scene, or because they don't care for the extreme themes. If you can live with the extremeties, I think
you'll find at least something you like.

So, give (real) independent cinema a shot, you won't regret it.
