No, I don't think it's off topic... well, not that much anyway.

We need to understand abuse, because it's so prevalent in our society and it causes so much suffering.

If I understand you rightly, you're using the term 'jouissance' because it's about sex and pain being interconnected? So are we, I wonder, talking sadism and masochism, with the addict/abuser being the sadist and the co-dependent being the masochist?
