To provide some sense of perspective to wodr's comments:

http://www.painofsalvation.com/be/population.htm

The link estimates the world's total population at 1 million at 10,000bce, near the onset of the Holocene. Most sources put the figure at 1 to 4 million. Regardless, a far cry from 7 billion souls. Notice also that the growth rate is relatively slow until about 3500bce when the Secondary Products Revolution takes hold. All of the sudden humanity discovered how to radically alter plants and animals for their own use. If I didn't know better, I'd think there was considerable genetic engineering occurring back then. In other words, who was the first human to milk an auroch and live to tell the tale? The sheer magnitude of foods and "productive" animals created during this period of time is ming boggling. Humanity transcended the constraints of Nature, but the ultimate outcome may be quite disruptive since we ain't as smart as we think.
