Nukes deterred powers from threatening India : NSA Shivshankar Menon
NSA Shivshankar Menon has been quoted by PTI that India was threatened thrice before 1998 Pokhran Shakti blast, by big powers. "On at least three occasions before 1998 other powers used the explicit or implicit threat of nuclear weapons to try and change India's behaviour," Menon said without elaborating.
he was addressing the National Outreach Conference on Global Nuclear Disarmament. He said that the global powers could not succeed because of the "hard-headed leadership".
"Since we became a declared nuclear weapons state in 1998 we have not faced such threats," added Menon.
"There is no question that these weapons have done so, to the extent that they were expected to when we decided to become a nuclear weapon state," Menon said.
he observed that nuclear weapons make a contribution to the country's security in an uncertain and anarchic world. Menonsaid, "The possession of nuclear weapons has, empirically speaking, deterred others from attempting nuclear coercion or blackmail against India."
Another interesting point that he made was that Indian nuclear weapons serve as a correction of military imbalance. Obviously referring to India - China equation and as a dig on Pakistan's use of nuclear weapon justification.
