Tantras are exhaustive ritual manuals. The basic concept of Tantra is that you can have both Bhukthi and Mukthi. That is you can enjoy life and at the same time progress spiritually. The emphasis on renunciation is not there like other systems of philosophy. This has been misinterpreted by many people to mean that anything goes. This is not correct.

Tantra lays a lot of emphasis on rituals more than any other system.

Tantras teach you

1. The types of Gurus. How to choose a guru. From what caste, whether male or female etc. Guru is the most important aspect of all Tantras.

2. Types of Deeksha like sparsa deeksha, sambhavi deeksha etc.

3. Mantras and their effects. Procedures for getting Mantra siddhi. Tantras generally insist on performance of Purascharana. Purascharana involves Homa, Tharpana etc.

4. Detailed instructions regarding Upasana.

a. Where it should be done. Home, banks of river, smasana etc. The effect of each place.

b. The type of asanas (seat) made of different materials and the effect of each. It also lays down the measurement of the asana.

c. How you should sit for Upasana. Siddhasana, padmasana etc. and the effect of each.

d. Types of japa malas made of different materials. rudraksha, tulasi etc. and the effect of each.

e. How to do hold the Mala and count. Different ways of counting for different karyasiddhi (prayoga).

f. The color and type of clothes to wear. The color depends on the deity and what you want.

g. The type of Pranayama for each Mantra.

There are ever so many variations that it takes years for one to master it. Then for achieving different ends you use different procedures. The same mantra is used for vashikaran, maranam etc and also for spiritual progress. The procedures depend on the prayoga.

Praypoga Vidhis are kept secret and are never written in a book. It is conveyed from Guru to shishya from old manuscripts.

Tantras are Basically from the Vedas. This is clearly illustrated by the fact the start (starting, invocation and so on) of a Homa is the same both in Vaidic and Tantric homas.

It is an extremely long and arduous practice and not a simple one as projected by some of the Gurus.

I am writing this only as a warning not to get deceived by the mention of the term Tantra used by many Gurus and Westerners. These have no relation to the real Tantra. These are called a Neo_Tanra and are a perversion of the original Tantras.
