Mohanlal’s Rasathantram which celebrated its 100th day on July 15 has become the biggest box office hit in the history of Malayalam cinema.
Moviebuzz puts together a behind –the-scene story on how the film was conceived, marketed and rode on Mohanlal’s family image.
The credit for bringing Mohanlal and Sathyan Anthikkad together goes to Antony Perumbavoor,
who produced Rasathantram. It was Antony who succeeded in what directors like Priyadarshan, Producer ‘Swargachitra’Appachan, writer-actor Sreenivasan all failed.
Today Antony says: “Njan aarum alla, Athu Deivanishchayam (I am nobody, it’s all God’s will).
Mohanlal and Sathyan has done nearly 27 films during 80’s and early 90’s. Their last film was in 1994 after which they split. If you ask Mohanlal why they split he will tell you- “Chumma (simply) and Sathyan’s answer is “Onnum Illa” (Nothing really!). For 12 years they went their separate ways before they came together with another blockbuster Rasathantram.
Rasathantram has beaten all existing records in 27 stations and has become the highest grosser in Kerala. This film is expected to gross an awesome Rs 21 Crore from theatricals worldwide which means a distributors share (after deduction of entertainment tax, theatre rentals, show tax etc) will be between Rs 10 to 11 Crore. Remember that the film was made for Rs 2.87 Crore including print and publicity!
Sathyan had written a script for the first time in his life as all his earlier films had script by Sreenivasan or Lohithadas. Says Sathyan: “I am learning something new everyday. What makes me tick is the fact that I am willing to learn new things even after being in the industry for 24 years”. He shrugs his shoulders and says: “I am glad that the film is a blockbuster”.
What worked for the film was the chemistry between Sathyan and Mohanlal. Sathyan has given a rebirth to Mohanlal as he could get back the family audience which he had lost when he did larger-than-life roles. Adds Sathyan: “Mohanlal is the quintessential common man for Malayalees worldwide. Says Antony who also convinced Meera Jasmine to act opposite Mohanlal (she was avoiding the superstars): “Ladies loved the chemistry between Mohanlal and Meera especially the Attinkara… song”.
Added Antony: “Innocent chettan’s comedy with Meera, Mammookoya and Lal sir was another highlight of the film. Gopi sir was apt as the father and the chemistry between the father and son was etched out beautifully by Sathyan sir. Some of the beautiful locations of Kerala were picturised well by cameraman Azhagappan”.
The aggressive marketing of the film by Alex George of Central pictures the oldest distribution concern in Kerala also went a long way in making the film a hit. George released the film in 50 centres and was also able to create an aura around the film as a family entertainer. Rasathantram’s historic run at the box-office has assured that Mohanlal is once again crowned as the Emperor of Malayalam cinema.
