This is similar to Baboon's thread about "Do White people lack common sence?".
When there was a heatwave in USA, the newspapers told people to drink much water, look after old people... It seems people in like e.g Asia and Africa can figure out that for themselves Also, we are constantley being fed with advices about how we shall eat healthy, do this and that... I don't think we understand less than Asians, Africans, Latin Americanos etc. but we are treated like that many times by our own fellow people. A western/white person would not survive in as much conditions as e.g a Papuan would. We Westernes/Whites are educated and smart but we still need guidance for many obvious things. |

I think it is by-product of capitalism and free market.
First thing is, before you manage to do anything, there is already someone who will do it 'quicker, better, cheaper'. This is connected to high specialisation. People of older generation or in the province in the west have ths 'old' school' but after sixties or seventies it is different. In a poor country an average person usually can do basic plumbing, cooking, electrics, car repair (especially when cars are old) basic medicine, tailoring, carpentry etc etc. In a rich western country noone can do anything cause everything is done by specialists. This created culture of economical inter-dependence and specialisation, but downisde is uniformisation and restriction. When you stop being pro-active and universal, sooner or later you will need someone to push the buttons on your remote control.(btw high technology doesnt help much here too). |

^^ the gap is generational, but also regional and socio-economic, within this country.
Poor rural people are more skilled in basic survival than wealthier urban people. Older generations were generally handier around the household with repairs etc. than younger generations. Sometimes there is a weird paradox, though. A heat wave comes, and poor elderly people in urban areas drop like flies. They have no A/C and nailed their windows shut to protect against burglars. |

yeah..... true dat, my father tailors his own shirts, repairs his own car, knows how and where to get food, can build stuff and do things around the house, but he cannot cook to save himself. I think it's because we don't really spend time thinking practically or paying attention to what we consider trivial "activities", and rather would be out having fun, making money or overstudying.
