Default Ancestry: how little is too little to claim?
There are people who are 1/16 Native American and 15/16 white European American who affiliate themselves with the tribe of their single ancestor. To me that is a little pathological. How little is too little in your opinion?

One single alien drop turns you into a mongrel.

That is why I am not a pure Spaniard.

1/32 or 1/64 is how O'bama is Irish and you should have watched how he celebrated it (and the Irish too)

For me anything below one greatgrandparent (1/8) is just a noise.

1/4... Otherwise if people could claim 1/76ths of their ancestry then I'm a Negrito!

Of course I'm not talking about someone saying they're fully Irish if they're only 1/8 or something. What I mean is, at what point is it too little to even say you are "part" something?

There is one exception for me, though... If a person was 1/16 German but, raised German then he can claim to be German.

That's probably a little too much to neglect.

A quadroon still looks "black" just to give an example.

What's his other 15/16?

If it's Austrian or even Danish he's all good, but if it's Ghanaian it's a little weird.

Not full ''Black''. Quadroon = 1/4 Black, right? Even if it's a bit too much to neglect it still makes a considerable part of their ancestry.

The other parts should be European for my other example. (I forgot to add)

I think it should vary depending on the background of the ancestor. 1/16 for an ancestor of another race and between 1/4 and 1/8 for an ancestor of the same race but different ethnicity.

Well, if you were 1/32 Irish and you claimed to be part-Irish it would a bit weird don't you think? Should we all claim to be part-black because of our common African ancestry?

The thread is not meant to offend anybody btw. I think you have a great heritage and given the numbers you have every right to celebrate each component.

Cracks me up evertime someone I know says I'm part Natlive American yet they look and act flagrantly white. My cantekerous, smart-ass side usually replies:

"nah sorry, you just look like another white-asshole..."

Seriously though, if you got and can trace then by all means claim it. Its all rather relative anyway.

I say any amount is amount enough to claim, especially if it can be proven. Although it's one thing to claim something, it's another to identify with it.
For example, according to 23andme I am less than 1% African. I claim African ancestry, I do not claim to be African (or black) by any stretch.

Depends more with what culture he was raised in my view. Because in the end "claiming ancestry" is just "feeling" blood connections that can be as small as 1/8 which doesn't make sense. You really only feel connection to any ancestry through having grown up in that culture and understood the significance of the ancestry.

Genetic simulations show DNA segments likely back to G-G-G grandparents. See http://www.genetic-inference.co.uk/b...-share-our-dna
