The United States has a high abortion rate as well despite widespread availability of contraceptives. In the case of ex-communist states, the research I have read in the past suggests that subsidized health care, discouraging of larger families by communist authorities, and lack of contraception due to quotas on production led to abortions becoming commonplace.

Latvia has really high abortion rates. I actually read an article about that and I was completely shocked. On every 1000 newborns we have 200 abortions. Those who are in the age group from 25 - 30 are the ones who decide to have abortion most often. But in comparison with previous years, the number of abortions has decreased 2x! For 1/10 of those who decide to have an abortion it is the first pregnancy. No wonder why Latvians are dying out.
---------- Post added 2012-03-17 at 17:47 ---------- I think the Soviet Union already had an extremely high abortion rate. Communist and former communist countries obviously have higher rates in general. |

Followed by India. China having a child limit and women just not valued in India. It's like that list was done to discredit Eastern Europeans. |

Not sure how India should be in the top. Pre-natal gender tests are banned. And getting an abortion is extremely difficult. But your line about not wanting a girl child holds true. |

According to the US media almost all the Indian abortions are underground and not reported/logged. Not sure if it's true or just US propaganda which likes to expose the lack of women's rights issues in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries. |

The women's right issues being reported are correct. But I really doubt so many abortions are happening in India, to make it top10. "It's the obliteration of a whole class, race, of human beings. It's half the population of India," said women's rights activist Ruchira Gupta of Apne Aap Women Worldwide." See http://abcnews.go.com/Health/women-p...0#.T2S8nZ0V1fM Are these real facts or inflated propaganda? The AAWW appears to be a legit respected organization. |
