What is your opinion on this? Are Austrians just Germans with a different political label or are they a viable separate ethnic group from the Germans? And what physical differences do you think exist between the two groups?
Wikipedia: An ethnic group (or ethnicity) is a group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage, often consisting of a common language, a common culture (often including a shared religion) and/or an ideology that stresses common ancestry or endogamy.[1][2][3] Another definition is "...a highly biologically self-perpetuating group sharing an interest in a homeland connected with a specific geographical area, a common language and traditions, including food preferences, and a common religious faith".[4] Wikipedia about Austrians: Austrians (German: Österreicher) are a nation and ethnic group, consisting of the population of the Republic of Austria and its historical predecessor states who share a common Austrian culture and Austrian descent.[15] |

The idea that Austrians are a separate ethnic group is relative new, in the mid 19th century, the German confederation was still led by Austria and not by Prussia as you can see here (even the flag was already black-red-gold): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Prussian_War

I think up to the defeat of Third Reich in 1945 most of the Austrian proudly considered themselves German and had a strong desire to join their brothers in the north. However, things changed after 1945 with the emergence of Austrian Nationalism. Many Austrian try to distance themselves from German as much as possible to avoid any association with the Nazi past and some even go to great length to claim they were victim of Nazi Germany at that time.
I read that in these days only a faction of Austrian (most of the members of Freedom Party) still want to cling with the idea of Greater Germany.. |

I think that Austrians feel very Germans inside. They just found it hard to deal with the charges for the atrocities of WWΙΙ
Here is the welcome of Hitler in Vienna Most part of Austria belonged to the Holly Roman Empire of the German Nation, they are all German tribes, they speak German, they like beer and sausages, they have the same culture they support each other in politics, Austria claims to be neutral, but in reality follows the example of Germany etc etc. |

Austrians are not real Germans. They are mix of Slavs, Germans and Avars (Turkic steppe nomads). They also have very low blondism, I think levels of 10% proper blondism is about right. I remember speaking to numerous tiroleans who were ethnic Austrian with dark curly hair and very short (5'8 - 5'9) range - it appeared to be the norm. The 'Adreas Hofer' type (a tirolean nationalist) |

When I visited Austria I saw many blondes there and most of the people had blue or green eyes. They didn't resemble southern Europeans for example. They looked more Germanic to me. I have the impression that blondism in Austria is much more the 10% you mentioned. I have never met an Austrian with dark curly hair. This is not even that usual in South Europe, where people are quite darker. Dark curly hair is mostly found in northern Africa, Middle East and in South Europe last. |

Austria was the epicenter of an empire wich compelled lots of peoples who were already a mix of various historical peoples (celts, rhaetians, slavs, germans, illyrians, hungarians...) It's not an isolated place, you can find many different phenos there. |

Ive been to Linz,Vienna and Tirol. Something worth noting is that around 35% of Vienna is foreign born - the UN headquaters are there for example. In Austira its well over 300,000 are from Yugoslavia alone also. I think you need to visit some rural area to get a good idea of what they're like. ---------- Post added 2012-01-12 at 11:43 ---------- I think curly hair (and wavy-curly) isn't rare among western europeans. I would say it's more (european standards) a west-east decline. Iberia, France, UK, Italy, Western Germany...have a lot of dark curly/wavy-haired people. |
