the majority of american films and tv dramas are set in places like NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, sometime Las Vegas. almost no one is set in Houston Tx, even if it has more than twice people than San Francisco and Las Vegas and it's the fourth most populous city of the country. why is that?

You could ask the same questions about Dallas and Atlanta... although Dallas of course had a famous show based on it.
Comparing the city of San Francisco population to large cities that annexed entire counties isn't really a fair comparison, since it is part a major metropolis with several times the population, and locked in by water on three sides. Taking the Bay Area in its entirety makes it comparable to other major metro areas. I think it is more about the "allure" of a city rather than its size or economic significance anyway. LA and NYC are centers of acting and other performance arts. They will always get more exposure. |

IIRC Walker Texas Ranger was based in Dallas. I don't know much about Houston. I know the oil industry is big there, and they have top ranked cancer treatment. I looked up their crime stats not long ago... pretty high per capita for such a populous city. |

I just looked it up, and it seems you are correct about that. I am in the process of moving to the outskirts of Dallas, and honestly the demographic in my area is more of the latte sipping, or pho / curry / taco eating variety. I normally think of rural west Texas or New Mexico when I think of cowboys in hats and boots. |

Probably any space movie that featured the Johnson Space Center is set in Houston in part (Apollo 13 or Armageddon off the top of my head.) My second favorite Wes Anderson movie Rushmore was filmed and set in Houston. Terence Malik's last film Tree of Life was set in Houston I think. The Cohen Brothers first film Blood Simple too. That 90's Gen X movie Reality Bites (Ben Stiller, Winona Rider, Janeane Garifolo, Steve Zahn) was set in Houston. Oh not te mention the book Friday Night Lights brought a great deal of attention to Houston and all the adaptions of that book as well.

Austin looked like a lot of fun on Death Proof. Although, Texan cities lack the diversity I'm accustomed to. I don't think I could comfortably adapt to the local desert-oriented culture. Also the summers are intolerable. I read somewhere that Houston is among the top five most racially integrated cities in the country, though, so they're doing something right there. Austin was rated for some of the best nightlife and music scene.

The true desert is really in southwest TX. Around Dallas it is what I would consider prairie. Somewhat flat, fewer trees and more scrub brush than I'm accustomed to. It is hot, but not much hotter than the rest of the southeast. Austin is actually more hilly and forested. The summers seem to be more dry in east TX than the rest of the southern US, especially the past couple of years, but I'm used to that... in the Santa Clara valley it barely rains at all from Spring until Fall. The foothills go from looking green like Ireland to brown. Occasionally they catch on fire. Actually Arkansas has been under drought conditions along with Texas for the past two years. In TN it is dry and hot this summer... they nearly cancelled all the fireworks this year due to the fire risk. Last year the Mississippi River was flooding, lol...
