Horners, all East Africans, and all Southern Africans have never been able to compete against West & North Africans. Maybe Horners need to change their technique and playing style to become more like North Africans who are a little more successful.
It's no surprise that the African teams that actually qualified for the WC are all West African and Algeria (S. Africa is just the host and will lose to France and Mexico). Last WC, three of Africa's 5 teams were Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Togo. All three countries are right beside each other with pretty much the same population. |

Ethiopia used to be actually decent back in the days, it won the 1962 African Nations Cup. It was also in the Finals in 1957.
After 1976 though, Ethiopia's football skills on the continental level started to wane considerably to what we see today. Here is the stats for the Number of wins of the African Nations Cup 1. 7 times Egypt 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2010 2. 4 times Ghana 1963, 1965, 1978, 1982 3. 4 times Cameroon 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 4. 2 times Nigeria 1980, 1994 4. 2 times Congo DR 1968, 1974 6. 1 time Côte d'Ivoire 1992 7. 1 time Algeria 1990 8. 1 time Tunisia 2004 9. 1 time Morocco 1976 10. 1 time South Africa 1996 11. 1 time Sudan 1970 12. 1 time Ethiopia 1962 13. 1 time Congo 1972 |

Ethiopia used to be actually decent back in the days, it won the 1962 African Nations Cup. It was also in the Finals in 1957. For the record, the 1961 and 1957 Ethiopian teams were comprised of mostly Eritrean players. Out of 11 starters of the 1962 Ethiopian team that won the African cup, 9 of them were Eritreans. Aside from that, horners suck at soccer because of our diet or perhaps our nature enforced diets. When the horn is more stable, expect to see the tide turn. The horn of Africa, for the last 60 years, has been the most unstable part of the World. Two of Africa's longest wars has been fought in the horn. There are plenty of horn of African pro soccer players in Europe, so it's not from any physical limitations. |

No... what 'chance' were countries like Togo given that made them qualify to World Cups? What does Togo have that Somalia doesnt, infrastructure or 'chance' wise? 2 - Funding 3 - Proper management 4 - Designated training facilities There are plenty of football fans in Somalia but it lacks a true football culture like the west African countries with multiple leagues and teams competing against one another, that draws out the best of their talented players that is ultimately combined into one national team. Somalia in peacetime had better/or similar infrastructure as many countries in West Africa, yet their performance was no different in that era to today. Most of the funding for the Sports sector went to long distance athletes like Abdi Bile. Important facilities like the Mogadishu stadium were used by these same athletes or were scenes of propaganda parades. If you took Abdisalam Ibrahim of Manchester City, his brother Abdirashid of FC United, Ayub Daud of Juventus, Liban Abdi of Sheffield United and other similar talented professional Somali football players and combined them into one national team with proper funding and government backing then this team would be a serious contender in any league or Cup. |
