Most of these black stand up comedians touched on race relations and contemporary social issues at the time, which was race, as well as criticism of social issues and stereotypical ethnic behaviour. Compare that with today, when religion is the major topic (in the 1980s, it wasn't as accepted to ridicule religion because it was still a very sensitive and protected topic; it's thankfully more accepted to ridicule and criticise religion today).
