Italian-Slav race riots of 1908

Little known race riot.

A dispute between Italian and Slav coke workers in Uniontown, Pennsylvania turned into a deadly riot with an Italian left dead and dozens injured.

100 years ago, these problems existed in the US because you had immigrants vying for the same jobs and houses. They didn't always understand each other's culture and saw themselves as different from each other. Today, many of the citizens of Uniontown are likely mixed, perhaps a Slavic-Italian. Those disputes are long gone and long forgotten.

Hehe. In Italy immigrants fight each other every day. Albanians vs Moroccans - Egyptians vs Peruvians....

I think it's interesting how competitive immigrants to the U.S. used to be, I think that competitiveness is one of the things that made them so successful. well, I'm not talking about these people in particular because they were just a bunch of coke-dealing criminals but in general, yes. It definitely helped.

Those men who worked in the coke plants had reason to be edgy. That was some back breaking work. Most of us couldn't handle the workload and hours they worked. I couldn't. That is why they desired something better for their children, which motivated them to succeed.

They were brewery workers not cocaine dealing criminals...

It's quite amazing to me what people in factories, coal mines, etc. had to put with and the hours they worked. Ten hour to twelve hours a day doing back breaking work. Yet many of us whine today over little things.
